Why make a will?
We often get asked by clients “do I need a Will?” – and the answer is always yes!A Will is your last opportunity to provide directions to friends and family as to how you would like your estate (that is, everything you own and everything you owe) to be dealt with.
People sometimes find it difficult to discuss death and dying, but by ignoring the subject your death can become even more difficult to deal with, both emotionally and financially, for those you leave behind.
A Will may be one of the most important items of paperwork you sign in your lifetime and can relieve financial and emotional strain for family and friends as well as minimise disputes about your estate. You Will deals with not only money, but also all of your possessions as well as your debts. Sometimes it is your smallest possessions, such as an engagement ring, that can cause the biggest rift in families.
Some key points to note: There is no better time than now to make a Will. If you are engaged and planning to marry in the future, your Will must reflect that. If you have young children, your Will can appoint a guardian to be responsible for your children following your death. There a strict signing and witnessing requirements for Wills and a DIY job for your Will may not give you the peace of mind that you strive for in making a Will.
